Signs You Need To Have Your Gutters Cleaned

Are there any obvious signs that you need to have your gutters cleaned? There are, that's the good news. The bad news is that once you see those signs your gutters have probably been neglected for some time and are in dire need of inspection and cleaning. With very rare exceptions gutters don't become clogged in a short amount of time. It takes a while for debris to build up inside of them to the point that it becomes a problem. When that happens, your gutters won't be able to function properly, and there will be some obvious signs that there's a problem. If you notice any of these signs, we'd encourage you to contact us at Gutter Cleaning Contractor as soon as possible. In a region like Boston, where there are heavy rain and snow, you don't want to neglect your gutters and allow a problem to persist any longer than necessary.

Leaking Gutters

Most people have segmented gutters that are connected at joints. These joints are the weakest point on a rain gutter, and if your gutter needs cleaning a leaking joint is often one of the first signs. It can be hard to spot a leaking gutter during a storm, which is why you should be on the lookout for them after a storm has ended. Once a storm has ended and it's safe to go outside, take a few minutes to walk around your home and take a look at your gutters. This shouldn't take more than 5 minutes and in those 5 minutes, you can learn a lot about the condition of your gutters. You should be looking for leaks anywhere in your gutter system, but you should pay special attention to the joints.

Misshapen Gutters

Rain gutters are designed to be lightweight and strong. Under normal conditions, gutters should be able to easily handle the water coming off of your roof. But when there is a lot of debris that has built up inside of gutters this places additional strain on them. This additional strain can cause gutters to start to warp and sink. If you notice that your gutters look like they are warping and being weighed down, then this could be a sign that there is a lot of debris inside of them.

Visible Debris

If you can see debris sticking out of the top of your gutters then you almost certainly have a problem. When debris is visible over the side of your gutters that usually means that your gutter is either totally clogged, or almost totally clogged. If you notice visible debris sticking out of your gutter you need to act quickly. The additional strain that the debris is putting on your gutter could cause it to collapse at any time. You also have to be concerned about any rainfall that happens before your gutter is cleaned since there's a good chance that your gutter won't be able to handle it. You also need to realize that if you are noticing debris in one part of your gutter system, there's a good chance that much of the rest of your gutter system is full of debris as well. We can't stress enough the importance of calling us to clean your gutters as soon as possible if you have visible debris.

Ice Dams

What is an ice dam? An ice dam forms when there is a blockage in a rain gutter that traps water behind it during the winter. When water is trapped in a rain gutter when temperatures drop below freezing it will turn into ice. That ice will further block your gutter trapping more water, which will then freeze. Before you know it, you can have a huge piece of ice resting precariously in your rain gutter just waiting to fall and possibly hurt someone or damage your property. Ice dams are incredibly dangerous, so if you notice one on your home you need to keep everyone away from it, and then you need to call us.
